Grading & Assessment

At MS 839, our grading practices center on growth, equity, and clear evidence of learning. Students are assessed on what they know and can do—not on effort, behavior, or homework. Grades are based on performance across a variety of formats such as projects, presentations, written work, and tests, all aligned to grade-level standards.

Key highlights:

  • No zeros are given; missing work is marked as “X” (60).
  • Assessments are scored on a 1–4 scale, then converted to a 55–100 numeric grade.
  • Learning is continuous: students can revise or retry assignments within marking period deadlines.
  • Heavier weight is given to later assessments in a learning cycle.
  • Final grades reflect either the full-year average or the most recent marking period, at teacher discretion.
  • Families are encouraged to stay engaged through ongoing communication and DOE’s NYCSA grade portal.
